About

درباره

I am a B.Sc. Computer Science student at Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST), currently conducting research as an intern at the Institute for Research in Fundamental Sciences (IPM) in Tehran. My work sits at the intersection of imitation learning, representation learning, and continual learning — with a particular focus on partially observable environments where the agent must make decisions from limited information.

My research follows three threads. The first is removing computational bottlenecks from training pipelines — most recently by eliminating back-propagation through time from the perception backbone via a Future-Action Predictor, while keeping a bounded-window Transformer aggregator on top. The second is post-hoc behavioral repair — correcting a specific, identified failure in a trained policy without retraining from scratch, and explicitly accounting for the case where the anchor set used for preservation is itself contaminated with the failure. The third is interpretability-aware optimization — jointly optimizing accuracy and explainability through a bi-objective training framework.

Alongside the theory, I build the environments the theory runs on. StrikeForce, a partially observable 2D battle-arena testbed, is the environment behind my recent learning-related papers, and is now opening to a broader research community through a public competition.

Research interests: Imitation Learning · Reinforcement Learning · POMDPs · Representation Learning · Continual Learning · Model Repair · Interpretable Machine Learning · Efficient Training · Multi-Agent Systems

Interpretability-Guided Bi-objective Optimization: Aligning Accuracy and Explainability
K. Fouladi (corresponding), H. Rahmani.
Preprint, January 2026.
Abstract. Proposed a bi-objective training framework that jointly optimizes predictive accuracy and model explainability, using interpretability signals to guide the optimization toward solutions that are both accurate and human-understandable.
StrikeForce: A 2D Partially Observable Battle-Arena Testbed for Imitation Learning and Multi-Agent Research
K. Fouladi. Sole author.
Preprint, July 2026.
Abstract. StrikeForce is an open-source, partially observable 2D battle-arena environment and client software implemented in C++17. It couples a playable, account-backed game client (terminal and SFML-rendered graphical front ends) with a machine-readable agent-plugin interface, a fixed-size local observation encoding, a deterministic seeded random-number generator, frame-level replay logging, a client–server networking protocol with server-side match arbitration, and a lightweight HTTP-based checkpoint-transfer service backed by an SQLite state store for versioned, parent–child-tracked agent checkpoints. The environment supports five game modes (Solo, Timer, Squad, networked Battle Royal, and networked AI Battle Royal), an item/economy subsystem with 16 purchasable items across four categories, and a pluggable agent-injection seam that allows a researcher to substitute an arbitrary policy for the shipped example plugin without modifying the core simulation loop. The full client, with rendering and all subsystems enabled, consumes at most 11% of a single CPU core on a reference laptop and peaks at 110 MB of resident memory.
No Back-Propagation Through Time via Future Action Prediction
K. Fouladi. Sole author.
Preprint, July 2026.
Abstract. We introduce a decoupled architecture for imitation learning in partially observable games that removes Back-Propagation Through Time (BPTT) from the perception backbone entirely. A Future-Action Predictor (FAP) backbone compresses each observation into a latent vector trained solely to forecast the expert's future actions over a bounded horizon H. A separate Transformer aggregator then combines a sliding window of these detached representations, together with local raw observations and the agent's own action history, to produce the policy output. Because gradients from the policy objective are stopped before the backbone, the two components specialise independently, giving memory complexity O(H²) with respect to episode length T. We provide a theoretical analysis showing that, under a pseudo-Markovian assumption, the FAP objective avoids the temporal Jacobian products responsible for BPTT's vanishing/exploding-gradient mechanism, and that a no-regret aggregation mechanism exists for the overlapping predictions.
Targeted Behavioral Repair with Contaminated Anchors
K. Fouladi. Sole author.
Preprint, September 2026.
Abstract. We study the problem of correcting a specific, identified behavioral failure in a trained model without retraining from scratch and without full access to the original training distribution. Given a competent base model θ₀ and a small corrective dataset Dfix exhibiting the failure, the standard remedy for avoiding collateral damage elsewhere is to regularize the update toward θ₀ using an anchor set Danc sampled from the original distribution. We highlight and formalize a complication that this standard recipe does not address: the anchor set is not guaranteed to be failure-free. When the failure region has nonzero mass under the original distribution, Danc may itself contain instances of the very behavior being corrected, so a preservation term applied indiscriminately can directly oppose the corrective signal. We combine parameter-space preservation (EWC) with output-space preservation (KD) into a single objective, characterize the repair–preservation trade-off this creates as a function of failure prevalence ρ and dataset sizes, and analyze the resulting multi-step dynamics locally.

No Back-Propagation Through Time via Future Action Prediction
K. Fouladi.
